JOIN THE TUDOR
ROSES If you think that
ladies barbershop and the Tudor Roses might be for you, the
following questions and answers might help you.
Why not come along and have a look (and listen) for yourself. If you are a little shy and would prefer to meet or speak to one of us in advance, that is no problem. Just contact one of our members and she can arrange to bring you along with her.
Q. How often
do you meet and where? A.
We meet every Monday evening ( with the exception of bank
holidays) at All Saints Church Hall, Petersfield Road, Winchester, from 7.30 - 10pm. In
the run up to major competitions, we also have extra rehearsals at weekends, in order to keep us "match fit".
Q. What kind
of songs do you sing?
A. We sing a
wide range of sings form traditional barbershop songs through to
more modern songs such as 'Bye bye love" and "Barbara
Ann' to songs from the shows such as 'Razzzle Dazzle 'Em' from
Chicago and 'Can you feel the Love tonight' from the Lion King.
Q. Do I need to know how to read music?
A. No. Your section leader will put all of your notes onto a tape for you to learn by ear.
You will also have a copy of the music so that, if you can read
music, you can choose which way to learn. Obviously it does speed the learning process if you can read music, but it is not vital.
Q. Do I need to have singing experience?
A. No. That is not essential.
What is required is the ability to sing in tune and to be able to hold your part, when others around you may be singing something different. However, when you begin you will stand near people who are singing the same notes as you, to allow you to grow in confidence.
Q How long will I need to wait before joining?
A. If, after coming along for a few weeks, you decide you would like to become a member, we will ask you to have a simple voice test, so that the Musical director can evaluate which section you would be best suited to. This test takes the form of singing a piece of music which is regularly sung by the Chorus, so you will have had plenty of practice at it, together with 4 other members of the Chorus, so you are not doing it alone. It will be your decision to say when you are ready to take this test. Hopefully, having passed, you will then wish to become a fully-fledged member of The Tudor Roses.
Q. Will I need to practice in between rehearsals?
A. You will be expected to do some homework - 1.e learn your notes either through tapes or by following your music but the effort is rewarded when we start to put a new song together and all four parts slot into place!
You can expect regular vocal coaching, not only at Chorus level, but also by Educators from the UK and abroad who visit Choruses from time to time. This helps enormously in the art of singing in four part harmony. Our Association takes pride in the level of assistance given back to British Choruses.
